Deals and steals

Tuesday, August 05, 2014

Checking out all of your FB and Instagram posts, it's hard to believe so many of the kids are back in school already! We are shopping for new room accessories for Maris as she is moving back to college this weekend. She will be living in the sorority house this year and, apparently, this room will be even smaller than last years dorm room. This rug may end up being wall-to-wall carpet. sigh...

{FYI--while shopping, this is how you decide if a rug will work in a college room}

While shopping for her new pretties, I have come across some great sales that I wanted to share with you. First up, Golly Bard's is offering 25% off everything in her etsy shop today. She has long been a favorite of mine and creates beautiful watercolor nature paintings.

Serena and Lily are having a private sale today before it hits the website tomorrow. There are some awesome discounts -- wallpapers are 50% off, paint is 65% off, as well as some great furniture and bedding sales. I have been watching and considering these kids chairs for a project for a while. Now on sale!

Lindsay Letters has extended her 'Christmas in July' sale and has some fun holiday prints and cute t-shirts at great prices.

And while on the computer finding these great deals, I have had a bit of a peeping Tom {cat}.....

I title this one "Kitty Purry does curtains'

And now that this view has been discovered, the curtain rod has a new best friend. They hang out together.
 a lot.

Have you discovered any great sales? Let me know!!

My college valentine

Friday, February 14, 2014

I started collecting items for Maris' Valentine package last month. College kids loooooove care packages and Maris always loves to celebrate holidays in a big way {well, let's face it, Maris does everything in a BIG way!!}. So, I put lots of care into filling her box with meaningful sweets.

I did a little watercolor painting {this is a real painting, not a waterlogue image!!} of her with one of her favorite sorority sisters, Marissa. I went off of an instagram pic of them tailgating at a State game. But, halfway in, I decided to place them in front of the Chi O house instead.

I ordered the coolest instagram marshmallows from Boomf {fyi -- that's the sound they make when they fall through your letterbox! They are based in the UK so I guess 'letterboxes' are common there??} I first discovered them last year, but, at the time you could only access your own instagram feed. Since I wanted to use HER photos, that didn't work. But, as of last month, they now allow you to upload anybodies pics {!} so I ordered immediately!

You simply upload 9 instagram pics to their website and a week later, you get a cute box with a copy of your selected images and the 9 square marshmallows printed with your pics. {these are totally edible, fyi!}

Aren't these fun??!! If you have a college kid, you need to order these!

Underneath those marshmallows is a monogrammed clutch from my favorite local store HannaColes. {because it's not a holiday without a monogram} Done in NC State colors, of course.

I think cute packaging can amp up the level of anything. Don't you love it when a boutique takes the time to wrap your items in tissue and seals it with a label?? Little details really do add extra value, even to little Valentine candies! I made little individual heart wraps for the chocolate lips. These are super easy to make.  These could be made out of wrapping paper, construction paper or kraft paper.

I ordered Chi Omega cookie cutters and made sugar cookies that I decorated with icing.

I bought all her favorite sweets -- the hot chocolate mix to go along with the instagram marshmallows, a chocolate owl {sorority mascot!}, jelly lifesavers that I topped with arrows {chopsticks that I turned into arrows with felt}, and little brown kraft boxes that I filled with Cadbury eggs {our favorite!!} and topped with glitter love.

I hope she knows how much she is loved!!

{if you follow me on instagram, you know I have been busy making heart decor for tomorrow nights high school Valentines Dance. Well, the snow has forced the dance to be postponed {super sad face} so I am not sure when I will get to show you all of the fun. Is it weird to decorate with hearts and arrows in March????}

Unchanged

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Two weeks from today, folks. I know I'm not ready, but it's been fun to add some festive touches to the house. Truth be told,  I may be just as excited about the arrival of this Monday -- Maris' last exam and her return home for the holidays. My sweet family under one roof...I can't wait!

She is meeting up with one of her best high school friends whose family has moved out of state. She will come and spend a few days with us. I am so tickled to have these two under my roof. Her room will again come alive with loads of stories, and laughter and piles of dirty clothes.

They will share college stories, eat too many chocolate balls, compare class loads, stay up way too late and sleep til noon.

I know this Christmas will be different. She's a college girl now and she is finding herself, making new friends and learning new responsibilities. I know that she has grown and changed since being on her own. But, as much as she has changed, so has her brother, her friends and me. Life has a funny way of changing you.

She has desperately wanted her room redecorated, grown-up, if you will. I know, I get it, it's what I do after all! But, I have needed it to remain unchanged if only for a little bit longer. This is probably a bit selfish on my part but, I find comfort in spending time in her room exactly as it was and quietly contemplating how far we've come. Handling her old photos and her handmade signs that her high school friends held up as they cheered for her on the court, remembering all of it.  And it certainly doesn't get by me that it's the brightest, sunniest room in the whole house. Quite appropriate.

It's a weaning process. Soon, we will pack away the pink jewelry boxes, the floral pillows and the Nancy Drew books. But, not this year. This year it's bright and sparkly and ready for the silly girls that will soon be giggling atop it's pink pillows.

Checking in on Maris

Friday, September 13, 2013

So many of you have asked how Maris is enjoying her 1st semester of college, so I wanted to update you on her shenanigans.

She is loving NC State and stays super busy.

Last week was Rush week and there were a million activities and new friends made.

Wednesday she found out that she got a bid to the sorority that she wanted!!

And here is her new Chi O pledge class!

Giving the hootie-hoo

Bunches of new sisters and so many great memories to be made. I can't wait to start painting sorority letters on EVERYTHING for her!! She has already put in some requests!
