Celebrate Life with Viva Vida

Monday, July 08, 2013

Well, I have to say that a worst 4th of July weekend doesn't come to mind ... the rains were simply insistent and flooding was everywhere. We were with electricity as much as we were without it. And, to top it off, a tree fell in the backyard yesterday. The good news is that it only knicked the back porch on the fall down and didn't come through the windows, which it easily could have. Jack and I took an axe and some hand saws to the hard as hades fallen walnut tree and we got most of it pulled to the drive way. It looked like it rained walnuts in my backyard. And not little brown walnuts like you see in the grocery story. When they grow on the trees they are almost the size of a tennis ball and the same bright citrus green. They are everywhere!!

Today is the first morning I have seen the sun in...I can't even remember!! I am praying that it lasts. If not, I will gaze at the sunlight that streams in this renovated farmhouse.

This is one of the most fun farmhouses I have run across! When the homeowners, Larissa and Peter, acquired this turn-of-the-century farmhouse in the Netherlands a few years ago, it looked nothing like this. In fact, the cows had barely left the barn when they took ownership. But, with Peters experience in renovations, he saw the potential in the huge space.

They loved the soul of the building and wanted to keep as much intact as possible. From the old structure, the new project split into three units: what was the stable turned into a living room, dining room, playroom and office. Where the milk was stored went on to serve as storage. The front of the house is now the kitchen and bathrooms.

The couple joined forces with the design group Viva Vida. "Viva Vida!" is an exclamation in Portuguese that means "celebrate life!". They did an incredible job of reusing as much of the original material found on the farm as possible. And in the firms signature eclectic style, there is a mixture of concrete, salvaged wood, OSB, metal, and exposed brick. I just love the innovative custom lighting, the photo wall mural, and the collection of colorful artwork. Not to mention the light -- the wonderful windows and skylights flood the space with the European sunshine.

Such a welcoming, interesting, fun home, right? To see more of Viva Vida's portfolio, check them out {with a translator!} here.
