A Simple Rustic Christmas

Friday, December 13, 2013

If you are visiting from the Retro Ranch Redo, I'm so glad to have you! Welcome to the North Carolina Smoky Mountains! I am tickled that Lindsay has made me one of your last stops in this weeks amazing holiday home tours. What a tour it has been!!
This year I went simple and rustic, mostly using cut greens and holly from the yard and lots of natural wood.

Preserved boxwood wreaths are in the entry along with Lolita, who finds herself with a new seasonal do, every few months. She can seem a bit cantankerous at first, she is after all a little lit.

Years ago I owned a furniture/accessories store. At Christmas, all of the downtown store owners decorated an outside tree to represent their store. Using a sharpie, I drew furniture, chandeliers, tables, and mirrors on cut wood slices. They were hung with glittery pipe cleaners. They have been packed away but, I brought them out again this year, instead of my very special sentimental ornaments. Yesterday, I explained that we have a new kitten that loves trees and we don't have a mutual trust. yet . {as in, I am pretty sure she would do damage to pretty, fragile 30 year old ornaments on the tree} So this year, so that I'm not all scroogey and walking on broken glass, I decorated it with wood.  {we won't even discuss all of the different places I have found the bottle brush trees}

Sadly, I never got to meet my grandpa. He hand crafted furniture. I would have loved to watch him create his pieces and perhaps even learn some of his techniques. I just recently was given this little chair that he made and caned. I love it sitting in front of the fireplace.

And speaking of love...I still love my fireplace makeover so much! Almost as much as I love a good monogrammed boot.

Our chalkboard wall is usually covered in lots of collected artwork, but I took it all down this month and gave it a little holiday love.

I blurred out my calendar so ya'll wouldn't be doing any silly stalker stuff ;)

We are blessed with loads of cypress trees, pine and holly's in the yard. As well as a ton of great local potters who use our local leaves to create pretty bowls.

I have a mad passion for vintage Christmas glasses and mugs. The glasses are from Dairy Queen. I love to look at them and be reminded of the wonderful trips and time spent as a child, at the walk-up Dairy Queen in Murray, Kentucky. And mom always lined our orange shag covered stair edges with the sweet Santa mugs. {That seems odd now that I type it, but not at all when she did it!}. I love that she gifted them to me!

My curly-headed kiddos when they were still writing their wish lists to Santa and fighting over what was the best cookie to leave for him.

I added a little pom-pom garland that I think I picked up at Target years ago. The Santa painting, even older than the garland {I think I painted it a good 12 years ago}, gets moved around year to year. This year, I thought the potty was perfect for him.

My terrarium also got a visit from Mr Claus, and, because I have heard he likes to pull an occasional all-nighter, I tucked in a little disco ball ornament. Go, Santa, go.

I have yet to decide where the cork vase greenery should spend it's holidays. It sure does a good job of making itself at home just about anywhere.

Thanks so much for including me Lindsay, and thanks everyone for visiting! It's been fun! Next on the tour is Kristen, so head over and see what she has in store for you.
