Kitchen envy

Have you seen this fantastic kitchen that was featured in Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles? It was a
collaboration between architect D. Stanley Dixon and designer Betty Burgess for Atlanta Braves
Derek Lowe. Such a lucky guy...
I love how the combination of the 12 ft ceilings, the light plastered walls and the light painted cabinetry allows the room to be bathed in natural light.  The details are so beautifully simple--the limed beams, the simple hardware, and the lack of moldings (the only moldings are the ones on the upper cabinets).

You can see both the Belgian and French influences. The industrial barstools (upholstered in patent leather!) against the white marble countertops and the inky black island-- so lovely. And how great to have a kitchen so big that you can just leave your vintage 7ft ladder propped against the cabinets!
But let us not skip over my very favorite--the island lighting!! Burgess used the end caps of  propane tanks--Genious!!

We all know that chalkboards make a room better. And this chalkboard, on the other side of the kitchen, provides a great background to the 18th-century farm table. I would normally think that these early 20th-century American chairs wouldn't be ones I would want to linger in over a long dinner, but, the really overstuffed black and white ticking cushions could persuade me.

Look at this little peak into the 'secret' pantry. Dixon created the pantry behind what appears to
be tall cabinets. Very clever...

Also loved the Garrison Keillor prayer. Kept it in a file for years, finally used it at a client's home. But I want it - where to find a wall? Maybe rotating my art is a good idea, but I am so fond of what is already in it's rightful place. Maybe add another room? Well, I'll keep pondering, but it was nice to see that prayer again.
