Painted platforms

Thursday, September 06, 2012

In trying to put together a disco outfit for our par-tay, I visited several thrift stores in search of an outfit and shoes. I can't believe I have no pics of Robert and me from the gala. It's so sad typical...

I scored a cute poly-rayon coral dress that still had it's original 70's tags on it. I wasn't exactly sure what type of shoe I was looking for, but I knew platforms were big in the 70's. After exhausting the vintage stores, I decided to give Target a try. I actually found a really cute floral platform number.

But, they were 27$, i'm cheap, and I would likely kill myself walking in them. So over to the clearance aisle I went.

platforms, yes, wrong color...but..

At this price, these were a 'make it work' shoe.

I headed next door to Michaels and grabbed some Martha 'paint on anything paint'

You know I love painting stuff and you have seen me paint shoes before, here and here. But, I had never used this new line of paint so I was excited to give it a try. I chose a coral that was the same color as the dress and a metallic gold {Maris is working on a project at school and snagged the paint, so I can't show you the actual bottles-sorry}. With a small brush, I painted on the first coat.

It was really splotchy. The gold barely covered at all. AND you must wait an hour between coats {lesson learned} i didn't read the directions and tried to put my 2nd coat on 5 minutes later. ..it pulled up the 1st coat. I lightly sanded it after I waited an hour, and it was fine.

I originally thought I would paint the whole shoe, but I liked some of the blue left as is. After about 4 coats of coral and 5 coats of gold, they were all done!

I used a satin paint, but I probably should have used a gloss paint or I could have sprayed them with a gloss poly, but, since I knew I would probably never wear them again, I didn't bother.

How great are the disco ball earrings I found?!

The paint held up beautifully--not a scratch anywhere. For a couple of dollars, you can give your shoes a makeover and with all of the colors available, you can match just about any outfit. Have you ever tried it?
