Express yourself

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

I used to love watching Oprah. When she launched her O magazine years ago, I was intrigued to see how this superstar would translate on to the printed page. I would flip through her magazine when I was waiting in line at checkout. Her 'At Home' editions that came out a couple of times a year always made it home with me, but I haven't really looked through the magazine in a while. Until this month.

It had me at 'Express Yourself'.

 Then it made me change lanes to get closer to its amazing chalkboard painted cover.

It looked familiar to me, those beautiful stylized graphics. I grabbed it and began to flip through the first few pages to see if I could find the credits attributed to the artist {yes I see that pink chalk in your hand, nice try, Ms. Winfrey}. Sure enough, it was done by the artist Dana Tanamachi, whose work I have spotted, and admired, over the last several years.

This Brooklyn graphic designer was at a party 2 years ago. Her friends had a chalkboard wall. She grabbed some chalk and started drawing. As an artist with 2 chalkboard walls in my own house, this too, would be my favorite thing to do at a party!

Here is her cute self in progress.

 The folks at the party were hugely impressed and it wasn't long before she got her first commissioned chalk drawing for a small furniture company.

Now she works full-time as a chalk letterer {how cool is that?!} You've probably seen her work. In 2011, she did a huge collaboration with West Elm for their holiday catalog.

 She has had the opportunity to work with several Ralph Lauren stores.

She grabs her inspiration from typography--old stamps, documents, books. It also comes from browsing old images of Brooklyn from the library. I love that her installations are so large and are completely hand drawn. Many times they are the backdrop for an event, setting the tone for weddings, grand openings and parties.

 And just what is that tone?

Tone = You've just stepped into awesomeness...welcome! {fyi--that's my interpretation}

 Here is a cool little video of Dana in action. Enjoy!
