The 2013 Superhero Gala!!

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

In case you are new around here, each August, our Hospital Foundation Committee puts on the biggest fundraiser of the year. What started as a progressive dinner, 14 years ago, now fills up the Event Center at Harrah's Casino. We have an enormous silent auction generously donated by more than 145 businesses, a raffle, a delicious dinner, and dancing to a live band.  To see past events visit here and here.

I have been an attendee for many of those years and a member of the committee for the past 4. I always work on the decor, but this year, along with my friend Jan Wilson, I was also the co-chair. We meet for months to come up with a fun theme that we can incorporate into the table decor, costumes, and the stage.

Superhero/supervillains was a really fun theme to work with. I ordered vintage comic books from etsy that we enlarged a bit and printed on glossy paper. These became our placemats. Heavy polka-dot paper became a table runner and each setting was sat with a Superhero Pez Dispenser tucked in a napkin.

{I am actually blessed with 2 legs, the left one is bent and out of frame}

I created my own 'Super Shannon' costume. I embellished a Wal-Mart superman t-shirt with glitter and sequins which I tucked into a glitter tutu that is an easy DIY {stay tuned for details!} My arm bands were made from glitter foam and my foam crown got a coating of gold spray spray paint. My comic tights were ordered from the wonderful folks at Celeste Stein Design.

Wonder twins!!!

Battery operated light sabers were propped in drinking glasses and made a fun backdrop for the bars.

The centerpieces were a beast to see to fruition! I could see them in my discombobulated brain, but figuring out what to make them out of, who to print them, how to make them dimensional, how to make them lighted.... holy batman, it took a village!!! I love the finished product!

The band was backed by a lighted NYC skyline. The directions on the backdrop stated that it would take '2 people 2 hours'.
Simply put: they are liars.
    It took 4+ people 2 days.

It was a Super fun night. The best part -- preliminary numbers show that we broke the $100,000 mark for our gross total to renovate our Mother/Baby rooms at Westcare Hospital!!! The most successful event yet! I am so proud of our committee, our generous sponsors, and the support of our small community.
